There is no stock library of papers behind this. You upload the material for your modules and every question Markly sets traces back to a page of it — so coverage is not a list we publish, it is whatever you have.
What it reads
Four kinds of source, and a question has to come from one of them. If a topic is not in what you have uploaded, Markly says what it searched and asks for the paper. It does not fill the gap from general knowledge, and it cannot generate a question of its own.
- Past papers
- The exam itself, split into questions, with the year and paper kept against each one.
- Problem sheets
- Weekly sheets and tutorial questions, which is where most of a term's marks are actually practised.
- Textbooks
- Worked examples and end-of-chapter questions, cited back to the page they came from.
- Syllabus
- The topic list your course is examined against, so every attempt can be scored against it.
What it can mark
This is the part that actually differs by course. Marking runs as a ladder, and the first rung that can decide, decides — so most answers are marked exactly, in no time, without a model being asked anything.
- Numeric, with units and a tolerance
- Compared as exact rationals to the tolerance the question sets — significant figures, decimal places or a relative margin. A right answer written as a fraction is not marked wrong for not being a decimal.
- Algebraic
- Marked on equivalence, not on matching the printed form. A rearranged expression is checked structurally, and where that cannot decide it is probed numerically across the domain.
- Vectors, sets and intervals
- Checked component by component, member by member, and on open and closed bounds.
- Multiple choice
- Including questions with more than one correct option.
- Proofs and derivations
- Marked against the rubric line by line, for method marks — this is the one place a model is used, and it is never used to decide a final numeric answer.
- Written and short answers
- Against the marking criteria for that question, point by point, with the marker's notes where the paper has them.
When a rung cannot decide, it says so and hands down the ladder rather than guessing, and if nothing can decide, the answer comes back as needing review. A wrong incorrect costs you more than a slow one, so it is never the fallback.
Courses students are using it for
Nothing below is a restriction — it is where the current students are. Any course whose material you can put in front of it works the same way.
- Engineering
- Numeric answers with units and tolerances, algebraic rearrangement, vectors and derivations. Sign conventions and units are the marks most often dropped, and they are marked separately from the method.
- Maths
- Algebraic equivalence, sets, intervals and proofs. A proof is marked against the rubric for method marks rather than for matching a model answer.
- Medicine
- Single-best-answer and multiple-response questions, and short written answers against the criteria for the station or paper.
- Law
- Written answers against the marking criteria, point by point — issue, rule, application, conclusion where the scheme is structured that way.
- Economics
- Numeric and algebraic work from problem sets, and written answers against the essay criteria for the paper.
- Psychology
- Multiple choice, short answers and statistics questions, marked to the tolerance the question sets.
